Somebody's Getting Desperate
Well, it happened. The Republican party has completely lost all credibility. Why? Because Joe the Plumber is advising them on Obama's stimulus package. I thought it was fake at first, but there are a number of other sites reporting the same thing. Just thought I'd share.
Nationalism, Monopoly, and Aging Infrastructure
Some woman tried to exchange Monopoly money for real money and succeeded once. Then she tried a second time and got caught. So sad.
Also, our infrastructure is falling apart just as much as it was last time engineers started complaining about it. Solid waste systems are in the lead with a C+ overall, followed by bridges (C); parks and rail (C-); energy (D+); aviation, dams, hazardous waste, schools, and transportation (D); finally, drinking water, inland waterways, roads, and sewage systems all got a D-. Well, at least our schools and hazardous waste systems are at the same level. I wouldn't want the streets full of children any sooner than I'd want them full of liposuction leftovers. Of course, the roads will probably have deteriorated completely away by the time that happens, so I'm not concerned.
Microsoft Sucks Less Now
I finally got Windows 7 working on my MBP a couple days ago and I'm impressed so far. I had to hack it a little to get Fallout 3 to work (like installing DirectX by copying DLLs from my old XP install), but everything else worked out of the box. There are some really awesome features that make it significantly easier to use over XP (I haven't really used Vista enough to know if it does any of this. I doubt it though.). For example, I forgot to unplug my printer when I rebooted to Windows 7 and Windows automagically got on Windows Update and downloaded drivers for it. Or when Windows won't let you delete a file because a program's using it, it'll actually tell you which program is using the file. The OS is full of little usability improvements like that.
It's fast too. Like, really fast. My XP install took about 45 seconds to boot, but Windows 7 only takes 25-30. Also: the new taskbar is awesome if you like the OS X dock. Since it's almost the same. I would say that Microsoft has caught up to Apple with this version, but since Apple's about to release a new OS themselves, I won't.
Food Poisoning = No College for You
That's just one of the ridiculous criteria college admissions officers use to determine whether a student should be admitted or not. Some of my favorites include:
- "An admissions officer is really asking himself, ‘Would I like to hang out with this guy or gal for the next four years?’ So if you come off as just another Asian math genius with no personality, then it's going to be tough for you."
- Athletes' applications at most schools go through a special committee. They're read before all the other candidates' files. That way the coach can push for the people he really wants and make sure they get a spot.
- "We brought in guidance counselors from a bunch of schools, most of them private high school counselors. And we visited those schools for events. We knew the private-school counselors by name and by face, and they've met the admissions officers from the most prestigious universities. That's a big advantage for students. Those counselors are pushing for them, advocating for them. I never got a call from a public school."
It's an interesting read at least. Also, new images and games. Probably videos too.
This is Something I Would Do
Somebody shot a guy for talking during a movie. Just thought I'd share.
